Hartpury RFC have offered contracts to five players from the successful 2018-19 BUCS Super Rugby squad.
Prop Alex Gibson, centre Jamie Forrester and back-row forward Max Clementson have all tasted Championship rugby over the past two seasons, as had big lock forward Rob Fuller before a bad knee injury brought his season to a premature end back in October.
They are joined by hard-running three-quarter Joe Margetts, who has mainly played in BUCS Super Rugby this year. All five of have been part of successful Hartpury student squads in recent seasons, with Gibson, Fuller and Forrester, in particular, appearing in Saturday rugby also.
Director of Rugby, John Barnes said “Alex was our BUCS Player of the Season for 2018-19 and this next year is a real opportunity for him to move his game forward. Likewise, Jamie Forrester has been part of the RFC squad for some time and will now combine his rugby with working at Hartpury College.”
“Max is a combative and dynamic open-side who can bring something different to a game. Rob had a difficult year, in playing terms, due to his ACL injury, but will complete his rehab with us and remain as part of the Championship squad.”
“We’re really pleased for Joe who has moved up through our BUCS teams over the past three seasons and really deserved his starting place this year. He runs powerfully and has a strong passing game.”
We are very pleased to have these signings as, yet again, Hartpury continues to provide opportunities for students to break into professional rugby.
The club can also confirm those current RFC squad members who have already re-committed for next season. They are former Gloucester forwards Akapusi Qera and Rupert Harden, front-rowers Will Tanner and Mike Flook, experienced back row duo Iain Grieve and Mat Gilbert, plus backs Harry Cochrane and Jake Henry.
Dan Murphy (prop) and Luke Eves (centre) will continue to combine their playing roles with coaching Hartpury’s student sides, while other talks remain on-going.
