With Italy joining England in naming their final squad for this year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan, there are already SIX former Hartpury University RFC players named for the tournament.
Jonny May and Ellis Genge could both have expected their England call-ups, while flying winger Ruaridh McConnochie’s selection was reward for an outstanding first campaign in the colours of Bath Rugby.
In the Italy squad named today, there was another ex-Hartpury ‘bolter’ as Gloucester Rugby scrum half, Callum Braley joined his club-mate Jake Polledri and former BUCS Super Rugby-winning skipper, Sebastian Negri, in the Azzuri squad.
May, Genge, Negri and Braley all played student rugby at Hartpury whilst also representing the RFC. Polledri barely missed a game in two highly successful seasons with the club between 2015 and 2017, while McConnochie played a number of games in the 2014-15 season.
With other countries yet to name their final player groups, the number of RFC old boys is seemingly certain to rise before the start of the event itself.
In the meantime, we wish these six players every success at the World Cup!
