There were mixed fortunes for the RFC in their fixtures with Fylde last season. In October, a Hartpury side still acclimatising to the rigours of League One put in a somewhat loose performance to slide to a 24-32 home defeat.
By late January, with a run of six consecutive victories under their belt, the team put in arguably its best performance of the season in ending Fylde’s unbeaten home record with an emphatic 12-35 win.
Try-scorers on that day included Dan Thomas (with a hat-trick) and winger Steph Reynolds. Neither are likely to feature this weekend, being required by Gloucester Rugby in the pre-Premiership ‘West Country Championship’.
Fylde themselves started this season with a narrow, last-gasp victory over Loughborough at The Woodlands last weekend. By their own account, it was a less than perfect performance (including a red card for lock Gareth Rawlings that subsequently drew a 7-week ban) but, in the end a win is a win and the Red & Blacks would certainly have preferred to start the season with a five-pointer…
Hartpury will have to improve sharply from last week’s mis-firing display at Ionians and, generally, will be hoping to improve on last term’s home form – five defeats were sustained at the College last season.
Fylde, with pace on either wing through Brennand and Dorrington, have the capability to cut up any side in League One but Hartpury will hoping that their competitive pack will be sufficiently strong to ensure that the balance of power remains with the home team.
It should be a belter on a new and improved surface at the Academy, particularly if we are able to play in fine weather…
