We are pleased to announce two additions to our playing resources as we move towards Saturday’s big kick off. Both are dual-registered second row forwards, an area where Hartpury have needed to strengthen following a number of players moving on at the end of 2020-21.
Alex Groves comes to us courtesy of the Bristol Bears and has been with the Red and Blacks for the last few weeks of pre-season, playing a part against both the Ospreys and in last week’s highly useful competitive session with his parent club.
A product of St. John’s College in Johannesburg, Alex is actually a British citizen, via his parents, and came to the UK having been ‘spotted’, on behalf of the Bears, by Peter Walton, now with Gloucester Rugby.
At 6′ 9″ he quickly caught the eye of the England age-group management and has been a feature of the national under-20 squad ever since, playing a full part in the recent 6 Nations Grand-Slam alongside Arthur Clark (Gloucester Rugby) who came through Hartpury at U18 level, as well as fellow RFC squad members Josh Gray and Tommy Mathews.
James Scott, also formerly of the England U20 set-up, returns to us from Worcester Warriors in a new arrangement announced today.
James is no stranger to the Alpas, having been dual-registered here in both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, making a handful of appearances. Last year he spent time with both the Glasgow Warriors and the Jersey Reds, as his game developed.
Having joined the Warriors Academy in 2017, he made his full Premiership debut early in the 2019-20 season, versus Wasps, and played a full 80 minutes against Bath a few weeks later.
We look forward to both making an impact alongside Dale Lemon and Cameron Jordan over the course of this season.
